A survivor of the Holocaust, he immigrated to the United States in 1948, settled in New York, worked as a butcher, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 — determined, he later said, to repay the country that had given him refuge.

Assigned as a rifleman with Company I, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, he distinguished himself almost immediately. In July 1950, during the retreat to the Pusan Perimeter, he was ordered to stay behind and keep open the vital Taegu–Pusan road link. Alone on a hill, he fought a personal 24-hour battle against overwhelming North Korean numbers, inflicting staggering casualties and slowing the enemy advance long enough for his regiment to complete its withdrawal.

On October 30, 1950, at Unsan, North Korea, Chinese forces overran his unit in a massive nighttime assault. After three machine gunners became casualties, Rubin manned a .30-caliber machine gun at the south end of the line until his ammunition was gone. Severely wounded, he was captured. Offered repatriation to his native Hungary, he chose to remain with his fellow prisoners — and then, night after night for more than two years, he slipped out of the camp to break into enemy food stores and gardens, bringing back food, medicine, and hope to starving men. His courage is credited with saving as many as forty lives.

Antisemitism in his chain of command kept his heroism officially unrecognized for decades, until a 1993 Army study confirmed the discrimination. On September 23, 2005 — 55 years after the war — President George W. Bush presented him the Medal of Honor at the White House. Rubin settled in Long Beach, California, where he worked in his brother’s business. He died on December 5, 2015, at age 86, and the Long Beach VA Medical Center was renamed in his honor. He remains the only Holocaust survivor ever to receive the Medal of Honor.

Sources: Wikipedia · Congressional Medal of Honor Society

Back to the Veterans Walk-In Network home page

Cpl, U.S. Army — Korean War Tibor “Ted” Rubin was born on June 18, 1929, in Pásztó, Hungary.
